Digital Harbor Foundation Release:

Digital Harbor Foundation to Host WebSlam 2014 Teen Hackathon
Baltimore Teens to Learn Web Design, Compete for More Than $500 in Prizes

techcoaches-300x300Baltimore, Md. (DATE)—Baltimore area teens will have the chance to learn how to build a website, while also competing for more than $500 in prizes in the Digital Harbor Foundation’s 2014 WebSlam.

Taking place on December 5 and 6, 2014, the free event is an intensive experience where youth develop skills in web development and then put those skills to work to help others. Open to students in grades 7-12, participants are presented with real-world non-profits and work in teams to solve their needs by building websites in an intensive hackathon-style “WebSlam.”

“This is our fifth WebSlam, and we are excited to repeat the tremendous outcomes we’ve seen already—for students, parents, non-profits and community members,” says Executive Director Andrew Coy. “Students are hungry for the opportunity to solve real-world problems for real clients in a hands-on hackathon experience. WebSlam is, essentially, an intensive and engaging Career Day for youth wanting to test drive a future in web development.”

Through the aid of tech coaches and direct instruction, youth participants (irrespective of prior web development background) learn the basics of HTML, CSS, and PHP through developing for the WordPress platform.

WebSlam 2014 is sponsored by APX Labs and features more than $500 in prizes, including prize money, web hosting, domain name registration and gift cards.

Students interested in participating can register online at webslam.org or over the phone 443-681-9384.
