Ace Hardware Loses a Great One
If you’ve ever been to Federal Hill Ace Hardware, you were probably helped at some point by Jay “Mike” Wilson (…and he probably found you exactly what you needed.) Unfortunately, Mike passed away on Sunday. From a post on Ace’s Facebook page:
Yesterday, sadly, we lost one of our own. Jay “Mike” Wilson passed away suddenly. He was part of the original crew that stocked the shelves for the first time. Mike will be greatly missed; he was not only a coworker but our friend. Rest easy my friend your legacy lives on in all who you touched with your amazing stories.
The photo/post has been shared numerous times and many throughout the community have expressed their condolences and shared their fond memories of Mike.
Mike, you will be missed!
HarborView Reveals Future Plans
Federal Hill’s HarborView development has taken shape since 1986 and opened its first tower for residences in 1993. The development is now comprised of HarborView Tower, a 249-unit condominium building; Pierside Drive Condominiums featuring 164 units and 165 new-construction townhomes; a 327-slip marina; and, three restaurant sites, including Tiki Barge, Tabrizi’s, and a vacant space that was formerly Sorso Café.
Earlier today, HarborView announced its plans for a 30-unit condominium tower, The Pinnacle. An article in The Baltimore Sun also laid out additional future developments planned by Harborview after speaking with David E. Swirnow. These developments include four additional properties Harborview is hoping to redevelop. From the article:
Several buildable sites remain on the property. HarborView is looking for a partner to develop more than 200 apartments at the corner of Pierside Drive and Key Highway. Another, across Key Highway, was proposed for about 300 apartments last year, but that property has not sold yet, Swirnow said. Two lots farther south along the water are also available.
The two “lots farther south” surround Little Havana. The 300-apartment plan across the street at 1100 Key Hwy. was presented to the South Baltimore community in 2014.
The Sushi Place Space Available For Lease
The space that formerly occupied The Sushi Place, which closed in 2014, is available for lease. The space at 1400 Key Hwy. in Federal Hill seats 75 and includes use of the restaurant equipment, bar and small office. The owners are asking for $18/sq. ft. for the year on the 1,730 sq. ft. space which would translate to a monthly lease of about $2,600. The new tenant would also have the opportunity to acquire the liquor license.
Washington, DC Loses Olympic Bid
Washington, DC was hoping to lure the the 2024 Olympics to the Nation’s Capital in a bid that surely would have needed Baltimore venues, such as M&T Bank Stadium and Camden Yards, for the large event. However, the United States Olympic Committee selected Boston as the city that would submit a bid to the International Olympic Committee.
uberX Lowers Rates in Baltimore
uberX, Uber’s most affordable transportation option, has lowered its rates by 15%. Rates have dropped from $1.30/mile to $1.05/mile. Uber estimates that a trip from Canton to M&T Bank Stadium would now cost $9.
