New Robotics Center in Hollins Market

SouthBMore.com, as well as many other Baltimore-based outlets, have previously covered the methadone and mental health clinics at 1001 and 1101 W. Pratt and the concerns the facilities have raised among the surrounding Southwest Baltimore communities. According to Technical.ly Baltimore, the same building that hosts a University of Maryland methadone clinic (1001 W. Pratt St) will now also serve as the home of the Baltimore City Robotics Center, an after-school program for Baltimore City Schools,  for at least the next 18 months.

There is excitement about the new robotics center, but also some concern for students being in the same building as a drug treatment facility. From the article:

“I wouldn’t say that Abell and UMMS were worried about safety per se, but security is a requirement because it is a medical facility,” he said. “Youth events would take place in the after-school hours and weekends, which are when BBH and the methadone clinic are not serving patients.” -Paul Mincarelli, director of operations at the Baltimore City Robotics Center

“The opening of the methadone clinic in that building last January caused a host of problems, in particular open-air drug dealing, that the community is still struggling with,” he said. “I’m overjoyed to hear that the Abell Foundation will now be bringing something to the area which will benefit rather than further burden the local community.”- Robert Meyer, a Hollins Roundhouse Resident

New Business for Federal Hill

SouthBMore.com recently reported that Federal Hill Mortgage would be relocating to 924 Light St. in one of two renovated retail spaces, which are part of a five-building renovation project on the 900 block of Light St. There is now an announcement posted for the other new retail space at 920 Light St., which was very briefly Alozio Hair. A sign in the window reads, “Hannah Nails and Spa Coming Soon.”

If you take Hanover Street/Ritchie Highway south into Brooklyn, you’ve probably noticed a large building under renovation to your left just north of Patapsco Ave. and right beyond the ramp to 895. This property at 3450 South Hanover St., which features a new large mural on its exterior, will soon be the home to the Brooklyn Community Health Center. It is described as ‘One Stop Shop Pediatrics, Adult Medicine, OB/GYN, Dental, Behavioral Health, Podiatry.’

The new health center is part of  the not-for-profit Family Health, which started in 1978 in Cherry Hill to provide ‘affordable primary health services to the community.’  The Brooklyn Community Health Center will be their fourth location in Baltimore.

Two Businesses Close

As first told by The City That Breeds PodcastDirty Oars Tavern, which took over the long-vacant space occupied by Lime, is no longer open. Posh Retro, located at 1003 Light St., also closed its doors.

Purple Underground Launches During Ravens Games

Paradox, located across the street from M&T Bank Stadium at 1310 Russell St., will be launching Purple Underground this Sunday and during all Ravens home games. From their Facebook page:

Purple Underground operates at the Paradox on Russell St. every Ravens home game. Food and drinks. 2 outdoor areas. 8 flat screen tvs, plus a projection screen. Fantastic sound system to listen to the game.

Baltimore Cracks Walk Score Top 10

Walk Score came out with their list of the 10 most walkable cities in America and Baltimore came in at #10. They also rated the top 10 neighborhoods in Baltimore and Downtown, Federal Hill and Hollins Market were included, but Mt. Vernon took the number one spot.

Baltimore was also rated as the 9th most transit friendly city, but did not crack the top 10 for  the most bike friendly cities.
