City of Gods Basketball Team On ESPN

A basketball team sponsored by City of Gods, a store and clothing line in Hollins Market, made it to the Final Four of ESPN’s The Basketball Tournament, an adult basketball tournament with a $1 million prize for the winning team. Team City of Gods fell 84-71 to Overseas Elite in the semifinals in a game featured on ESPN. A total of 97 teams competed in this year’s tournament.

The team was coached by Baltimore native Joe Connelly and the roster included players/alumni from local schools such as University of Maryland, Georgetown University, George Washington University, and Morgan State University. Read more about the team in The Baltimore Sun.

Sagamore Leases Space from the National Aquarium

IMG_8541Sagamore Development has reached a deal with the National Aquarium to use its parking lot adjacent to Middle Branch Park for parking, access, landscaping, and construction staging for City Garage, which is currently under construction. City Garage will be the home of Under Armour’s Innovation Team, which is responsible for designing shoes, and a temporary home to bottle Sagamore Spirit rye whiskey, which will debut in January 2016. City Garage will also be the home of trades like glass blowing, blacksmiths, flag makers, metal workers and 3-D printing.

Ryleigh’s Oyster Shells Used for Brewing

Ryleigh’s Oyster, which now has locations in Federal Hill, Mount Vernon and Hunt Valley, grows its own line of oysters, named Avery’s Pearl, in Hog Island Bay, VA. Ryleigh’s was recently featured in a City Paper story about how the shells from Avery’s Pearls are used for Fordham and Dominon’s Rosie Parks Oyster Stout, which raises money for the Chesapeake Maritime Museum. From the article:

McComas (Owner Brian McComas) is pretty pumped to be along for the ride, too. Rather than his shells being used in driveways or gardens, they’re going into a product he sells at his restaurants. “We’re honored to participate in the crafting of this beer,” he said. “It’s exciting to support a cause like Chesapeake Bay maritime history. That’s near and dear to our hearts at Ryleigh’s, which makes it all the more special.”

Baltimore Recognized as a  Top City for Startups

Entrepreneur ranked Baltimore #2 in its feature 9 Hot Startup Cities That Aren’t San Francisco or New York, giving a nod to Federal Hill’s Citelighter. From the article:

There’s a quiet revolution happening in Baltimore, which has become a booming hub of education-focused companies anchored by Johns Hopkins University, named the best grad school for education by U.S. News & World Report. The city is also home to Laureate Education (formerly Sylvan Learning), a for-profit education powerhouse.

Now Baltimore is luring ed-tech startups. Upgrades at M&T Bank Stadium

Enhanced Wi-Fi, 3-D video, and new safety measures are coming this year to M&T Bank Stadium.

From a Baltimore Ravens release:

Enhancements for the 2015 season, which starts with the first preseason game against the New Orleans Saints next Thursday (Aug. 13), include a $6.5 million investment in an expansive Wi-Fi system, a revolutionary 3-D video system called freeD that shows replays from every possible angle, and new safety measures to ease fans’ entry into the stadium and ensure top-of-the-line security for everyone at M&T Bank Stadium.

“Our good fortune is that every game in Ravens history has sold out, and we want to make sure that continues. We compete for families’ entertainment dollars, and that includes watching our games from the comfort of homes,” Cass explained. “Along with a consistent winning team, we must continue to give fans reasons to come to our home games. These improvements extend our efforts to make Ravens games the best.”
