Updates at Housewerks
Housewerks, an architectural and industrial salvage and antiques business occupying the historic Bayard Station at 1415 Bayard St., is one of the many unique businesses in South Baltimore’s Camden-Carroll Industrial area. The Bayard Station building was built in 1885 and was once the headquarters of the Chesapeake Gas Company of Baltimore City. If you have ever been to Housewerks, you’ll see the interior of the station has been nicely preserved. Now, work has begun on the outside of the building as large new windows are currently being installed and the exterior trim is being painted.
Housewerks also received national recognition in a recent Buzzfeed article titled, “16 Totally Instagram-Worthy Places in the Northeast.”
MetroPCS Opens in Federal Hill
Many long-vacant Federal Hill storefronts have recently been getting new tenants. City Nails & Spa opened at 1128 Light St. in a space that was vacant for more than ten years; Forever Yogurt moved into the old Movietime Video, which was vacant for several years; Blue Moon Café took over the space of Opi’s Laundromat, which was vacant for almost two years; and, interior work is now underway at 1205 Light St., the former home of Computer Harbor, which has also been vacant for several years.
Another long-vacant space has been leased as cell phone service provider MetroPCS has opened a new store at 1136 S. Charles St.
Hot Corner Lee’s Closes
Unfortunately you will no longer be able to get any more of Hot Corner Lee’s cheesesteaks, curly fries and Natty Boh chili at the Cross Street Market, however chef Toby Gilbertson’s food is still available in Federal Hill. Gilbertson is now the chef of Brewer’s Cask, where he has brought his signature cheesesteaks and fries, as well as the addition of burgers, flat breads and more, to the menu.
Gallup Poll Findings Regarding Maryland
Maryland is affectionately dubbed “The Land of Pleasant Living” by National Bohemian, but lately is seems most residents wouldn’t agree with that sentiment. A recent Gallup Poll shows that Maryland is the third least popular state among its own residents as 47% of those polled said they “Would Leave if They Could.” Maryland only trailed Connecticut and Illinois. A likely reason for that could be taxes as 67% of Marylanders said the taxes were too high in a recent Gallup Poll (to note, Baltimore has the fourth highest of any city in the country.)
Bankrate on Monday listed their 10 Worst States to Retire and Maryland came in at #9. The reasons cited were high cost of living and high taxes. The state also received low scores for health care quality and crime rate above the national average.
